Upward Bound

For over forty years MSU's Upward Bound program has helped hundreds of high school youth in the Lansing area from low-income families or families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree to complete high school and enter a post-secondary educational institution. This is accomplished by providing fundamental support and academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. Tutoring, counseling, mentoring, career exploration, cultural enrichment, and work-study programs are also offered.

The program partners with Lansing's Everett, Sexton and Eastern High Schools to identify and enroll approximately 100 Lansing area high school freshmen and sophomores and assists them throughout their high school years to develop the academic and social skills necessary for matriculation in post-secondary education.  The program provides admissions and financial aid counseling and assistance to participants to expedite their admission to college as well as serves as a forum for university units to examine concepts and methods related to the recruitment, instruction, and motivation of disadvantaged students.

The Upward Bound program
continues to expand opportunities for its students by offering experiences through a variety of programs that focus on cultural enrichment and personal growth. This includes study skills workshops, cultural field trips, study abroad opportunities, college visits, career exploration, job shadowing experiences as well as programs to help parents and students navigate the financial aid process.

"As a student professional I have the opportunity to attend and present at State and National Conferences. The Decker and Muns Memorial Scholarship has made that possible by providing discretionary funds to help offset my travel costs which often includes my attendant's travel costs."
