Michigan State University's Tower GuardSociety is distinguished as the oldest active MSU-based student organization, and celebrates 75 years of service during the 2008-2009 academic year! Membership in Tower Guard is founded upon four corners or pillars: leadership, service, scholarship, and character.
The organization's main commitment is to serve students with disabilities. Each member upholds this tradition by dedicating a total of 120 hours of reading textbooks and exams through the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. The organization has an extensive list of traditions that have evolved over the years. Tower Guard remains active on campus through annual Homecoming tours of Beaumont Tower, and the Shamrock 5k Run/Walk/Roll.
Tower Guard is the only student organization that holds the key to Beaumont Tower. In the early years when Tower Guard was comprised of 20 - 25 members, the meetings were held on the second floor of the Tower; today's larger membership allows only the officers to continue this tradition. Though Tower Guard has evolved over the years, it continues to serve as a prominent model of leadership, service, scholarship, and character for the entire MSU community.
Each Tower Guard member devotes 120 volunteer hours to reading, and electronic text production for students with visual impairments. Financial pressures make it difficult to balance academics, need for external work and the service obligations of Tower Guard membership. In support of these bright students who give their time, please consider a gift to support the Tower Guard Society Scholarship and help Tower Guard members further their mission of Leadership, Service, Scholarship, and Character.
