MSU Safe Place (MSUSP) offers many services related to relationship violence. MSU began offering services at Michigan State University, through the Department of Residence Life, in 1994. This program was started because of community organizing efforts of Mrs. Joanne McPherson, who was the MSU First Lady at Michigan State University from 1993-2004.
The only domestic violence shelter and support program on a college campus in the United States, the program offers shelter annually to approximately 65-90 adults and children. In addition, MSU Safe Place annually provides training and education to over 15,000 people in the Lansing community.
MSU Safe Place provides the following free and confidential services to students, staff, faculty, alumni, retirees or their partners:
Shelter: a 12-bed, emergency, 30-day shelter for adult victims/survivors and minor-aged children
Counseling and support group: offered to those victimized by relationship violence
Advocacy: help victims/survivors access financial assistance, legal services, obtain a Personal Protection Order, safe and affordable housing and childcare, support to stay in school, safety planning, etc.
Scholarships: to survivors attending MSU who need extra support due to current or past domestic violence.
Community education: offered to any campus or community groups wanting information about myths and facts, area resources, strategies to maximize services provided to victims and accountability to batterers, and the dynamics of relationship violence and volunteer opportunities.
Because Michigan State University is a Land-Grant institution, Safe Place supports community outreach efforts by offering all services to those who are not affiliated with MSU when staffing and other resources allow us to do so. Priority educational and support services, however, are provided to those who are MSU-affiliated.
