The Office of Supportive Services

The primary purpose of The Office of Supportive Services (OSS) is to assist students who, for diverse reasons, have not had sufficient opportunities to adequately prepare for the challenges of higher education. OSS works to enable these students to develop coping and self management survival skills for success within the University. OSS also provides motivation, academic advising, social counseling, personal planning, career guidance and skill enrichment seminars.

In the 1960's the precursor to the Office of Supportive Services was established as part of a developmental admissions program. Due to concerns about institutional and other social factors operating at the time, this program was conceived by a team of concerned faculty members. They recognized the need to provide post secondary educational opportunities to students who might not have had the chance to attend college. It is the commitment of higher education, as well as our office, to provide educational and career opportunities to such students. OSS is dedicated toward the advancement of students admitted to Michigan State University.
The mission of OSS is to provide comprehensive services to first-generation, low income college students and those who meet particular admissions criteria. We are committed to creating and maintaining a student-centered learning environment that encourages academic excellence; values the importance of an education that promotes a global vision; and moreover, nurtures and facilitates movement toward academic achievement and personal goals of students.

The Office of Supportive Services
remains committed to creating and maintaining a student-centered learning environment that encourages academic excellence; values the importance of an education, promotes global vision; facilitates movement toward academic achievement, and nurtures the personal goals of students.  The OSS has served thousands of diverse students since its inception and the impact of this sustained, pro-active approach has increased the number of at risk students, who, when given an opportunity, were able to move beyond imposing, life circumstances, to pursue and receive degrees.

"I would like take the time to thank you for a wonderful sailing experience, as I had an incredible time! This experience was also a great way to see other aspects of the Intramural Department. I had not been to the Sailing Center until the opportunity arose for me to be exposed to it via this sailing class. Sailing was a great and relaxing way to end the summer and I learned a lot about the technique of sailing. My favorite part and the most beneficial activity was to actually get out on the water on my own, tacking and jibing, knowing that if I didn't do it correctly I'd have gone swimming. Once again I want to thank you for an amazing experience and, above all, a great time. I appreciate the opportunity given me."
