The College Assistance Migrant Program, a scholars program, offers a variety of services to help migrant students get into MSU and succeed in higher education. The U.S. Department of Education has been partially financing CAMP since 2000 to enable more migrant and seasonal farmworker students to attend MSU. CAMP provides many special services for migrants. For example, the program has provided bilingual instructors, remedial instructors, counselors, and summer school teachers. The literature on migrant education repeatedly emphasizes the importance of: building on the strengths and experiences migrant students bring to the classroom, establishing a positive learning environment where the diversity among students is acknowledged and celebrated, and allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways.
The High School Equivalency Program gives migrant farmworkers a chance to improve their lives by earning a GED. Funded by the US Department of Education, the program provides instruction in English and Spanish through individualized tutoring in addition to life skills training and career exploration. Upon successful completion of the program, MSU HEP students are encouraged to continue their education through college or technical / vocational schools. We invite you to play a major role in helping MSU provide an opportunity of a lifetime by making a financial contribution to help migrant and seasonal farmworkers at MSU complete their studies, graduate, and begin productive lives in many fields of endeavor. Ultimately, your gift will help transform the lives of many more children from migrant communities and help advance an often neglected but valuable segment of American society.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Support Migrant Student Services
Migrant Student Services helps those with seasonal farmworking backgrounds succeed at Michigan State University. If you are interested in making a gift to support Migrant Student Services at MSU, please contact the Student Services Advancement Office at (517) 355-7535 or make your gift online.
Success Scholars Initiative
The average CAMP student graduates from MSU with approximately $10,500 of college debt. To a family whose average income is less than $25,000 a year, this is significant. To help alleviate the pressure of the debt and to recognize students for their dedication and commitment to stay in school, MSS is launching a new Success Scholars Continuing Education Scholarship Fund. Selected for academic achievement and progress, Migrant students who excel in their studies can qualify to receive this progressive scholarship in their sophomore, junior and senior year.
Migant Student Services Endowment
Donations to the Migrant Student Services Endowment provide support for students in both the College Assistance Migrant Program and the High School Equivalency Program. Funds help students with tuition, room and board, textbooks, essential testing costs or emergency travel needs. Make a gift online.
