This endowed scholarship honors the contributions of Florence Harris, who served as director of the Office of Supportive Services from 1979 until 2000. Florence started with the program in 1971 as a graduate student, then went on to become a counselor and assistant director before serving as director. Florence has always been known for her dedication and sensitivity to students who have come to Michigan State University with a variety of characteristics that make them "at risk" for success in their academic pursuits. Florence Harris' work at MSU has spanned thirty years and during that time she helped create and direct various aspects of the College Achievement Admissions Program (CAAP) in conjunction with her role with the Office of Supportive Services.
CAAP students are low-income, first generation students from Michigan's inner cities and remote rural areas. These students, while demonstrating academic and leadership strengths in high school, may require additional supportive services when arriving at the university. Because a large portion of these students are low income, the Harris Scholarship encourages and assists sophomore, junior and senior CAAP students who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, the motivation and initiative coupled with high academic achievement are hallmarks of the scholarship recipients and the fund is meant to assist them in their effort to continue their education and eventually graduate from Michigan State University.
