MSU's GEAR UP College Day Program provides post-secondary, career based information and tutorial assistance to thousands of middle school students from Albion, Detroit, Lansing and Jackson. This program is designed to introduce low income youth to the college experience and help them develop an interest in going to college. Accomplished through a series of weekend engagement opportunities on campus from September through May, MSU provides program participants, and their parents/guardians, with career based information on post-secondary careers, academic skill development tools as well as facilitate interaction with undergraduate students and offers the following signature programs:
The Life Planning Seminar is designed to encourage students to discuss their career interests and personal strength through the use of simulated games, role-play, and discussion groups.
The Academic Skill Building Workshop introduces students and teachers to the techniques of study skills and career awareness with a focus on techniques on how to comprehend a textbook and developing successful time management skills.
The Explore MSU Program provides participants with a guided tour of campus and includes visits to the colleges and residence halls. Participants are given an opportunity to interact with the colleges through hands-on experiences that highlight career opportunities within the featured programs. This past year included visits to Veterinary Medicine, College of Business, College of Nursing, Agriculture and Natural Resources, College of Education, College of Engineering, James Madison College, MSU Museum, MSU Dairy Store, Office of Supportive Services and Planetarium and Minority Coordinated students program.
The Undergraduate Student Panel is designed to allow students the opportunity to ask undergraduate college students about their experiences on campus.
