In 1993 the estate of Daniel and Barbara Reid established an endowment to support the future of Intramural Sports and Recreative Services at Michigan State University. The purpose of the fund is to encourage and assist students, faculty, staff and others to participate and use the resources available through the department.
Established in honor of Dr. Daniel Reid and his wife Barbara, Dr. Reid was a 1964 graduate from the college of Natural Science and demonstrated his "joie de vive" while a student on campus as captain and president of the MSU Crew Club as well as through his participation in MSU's intramural activities. His personal commitment to experience life to the fullest, alleviate pain, and restore and promote health was demonstrated as an active member of MSU's Sports Clubs.
Graduating from the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Reid began general surgery at Virginia Mason Hospital. He served three tours of duty, including two extra tours as a Green Beret physician, in the Vietnam War. After returning from Vietnam, Dr. Reid pursued training in thoracic surgery and opened his practice in Concord, California. He continued in the army reserve, working at the Army Evacuation Hospital in Oakland California. In 1991 he served for five months in the Persian Gulf War.
Throughout his life, Dr. Reid was a sterling example and advocate of physical fitness, keeping himself in superb physical condition by running, climbing, and playing polo. In 1983, he successfully scaled the daunting east slope of Mt. Everest as a member of the first American team successfully to reach the summit. With his wife Barbara, he continued climbing. On September 10, 1991, during their African Mt. Kenya Climb, the Reids tragically died in a 5,000 foot fall.
Dan and Barbara Reid made their first gift to Intramural Sports in 1971 and maintained their support until their untimely tragic accident. It is an honor for The Intramural Sports and Recreative Services Department at MSU to maintain this ongoing tribute in their names.
