Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions

The Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions (OCAT) constructs supportive social and educational communities that actively involve students in learning.

Student-to-student interaction is the key to benefiting from diversity, and OCAT strives to bring together individuals as well as groups of students from diverse racial, ethnic, international, and domestic backgrounds for meaningful interactions. Moreover, OCAT supports individual students in their navigation of cross-cultural encounters, and in their own understanding, exploration and development of cultural identity.

In part, OCAT accomplishes this mission by building critical alliances with peoples, programs, and ideas throughout the University. Additionally, OCAT helps students to better understand themselves and others through cultural, social, and academic activities.

The Intersections Fund

The Intersections Fund
supports creative and innovative initiatives that cultivate cooperation among different cultural student communities. Examples of programs include our Prelude to a Pow Wow, where Native American students teach non-Natives about the meaning of a Pow Wow; the Dine with a Scholar program, where small groups of students dine and interact with selected faculty to learn more of each other on a personal basis and seek guidance on how to integrate more fully in the academic offerings of MSU; and, our Spartan Remix program that brings together students-of-color, LGBT-identified students, international students, and majority students for an evening of activities and cultural programs that set the stage for "student intersections" throughout the year. The Intersections Fund provides unrestricted programmatic support to these and similarly focused programs. Make a gift online to support The Intersections Fund.

The Asian Pacific American Student Leadership Endowment

"I think back to the summer of 1955 when I could just barely get around on crutches, didn't have a formal education and needed a safe/nice place for my family, and MSU was there for us!"
